The ocean course at the sea pines resort, designed by george cobb, was the first 18-hole layout to open on hilton head island in 1960, and it was later redesigned by mark mccumber in the mid-1990s.

Love golf architecture, which included davis love iii, his brother mark, and lead architect scot sherman, renovated the course in 2016, restoring natural dunes and adding new sand hills that fit in with the rest of the course.

Thousands of exotic plants were planted, trees were cut, mowing lines were changed, and water hazards were rendered less invasive – all in an effort to improve the course's playability and seaside ambience.

Both the tee and the green on the iconic par three 15th, one of only two oceanside holes on hilton head island, have been elevated, making the hole even more aesthetically appealing.
