Rockliffe Hall - Golf Course in England

About Rockliffe Hall

Rockliffe hall is located along the river tees' meandering bend, just south of darlington. It is without a doubt the most thrilling modern golf resort in england's northeast. The resort's flagship is rockliffe courtyard, a tastefully renovated 18th century country house surrounded by 350 acres of magnificent county durham parkland.

Throughout much of its history, the estate has been privately owned, and the new owner, steve gibson, is a football fanatic. He not only owns rockliffe hall, but also middlesbrough football club, which has its training headquarters on the rockliffe farm. Gibson hired one of england's oldest and most well-known golf course designers to create a championship course to complement the five-star hotel. Hawtree limited has been designing golf courses since 1912, and the course at rockliffe hall was designed by their associate architect, marc westenborg, who was also responsible for the critically regarded renovation of dooks golf club.

The multi-million pound course, which opened in 2009, is one of europe's longest, measuring 7,879 yards from the tiger tees. Rockliffe hall was designed with championship golf in mind, and it is a tough challenge not only because of its scope, but also because of its strategic and sometimes penal nature.

Lakes, wetlands, woods, and bold bunkering (particularly around the greens), combined with deep tangly rough, make rockliffe hall a formidable challenge. The par three 5th, which many consider to be rockliffe's iconic hole, features an island green, but the 242-yard one-shot 15th is the most challenging par three on the map, with water running in along the hole's right side... a par here is something to be coveted.
